Teak Wood Treatment

Teak Wood Treatment

Teak wood is a popular choice for furniture, flooring, and garden furniture – and for good reason. For many years, teak has been a preferred wood species thanks to its beautiful appearance and durability. However, to preserve its natural beauty and protect it from indoor wear as well as changing outdoor weather conditions, it is important to treat the wood correctly.

On this page, you can read more about the best methods for treating teak wood using our wood oils for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Why Is Teak Wood So Popular?

Teak wood is known for its dense grain structure and natural oil content, which makes it highly resistant to moisture and dirt. This makes it an ideal material for both indoor and outdoor use. In Denmark especially, teak has long been used for functional furniture as well as a stylish addition to interior design.

Over time, however, teak can become discoloured or develop a dry surface. This is why proper maintenance is essential to keep the wood in optimal condition.

How to Ensure Proper Teak Wood Treatment

Before beginning any teak treatment, make sure the surface is clean and free from dirt, old oil, or varnish residues. We recommend using Rubio Monocoat Cleaner to thoroughly clean your teak furniture without damaging the surface.

If there are visible scratches or marks, lightly sanding the affected area can help achieve a smooth and even finish before treatment.

Indoor Teak Wood Treatment

If you have indoor teak furniture, maintenance typically involves oil treatment to preserve the wood’s warmth and prevent it from drying out.

Start by cleaning the surface with a wood soap. Afterwards, apply our indoor wood oil, Oil Plus 2C. This oil is suitable for all wood types and nourishes the wood with environmentally friendly ingredients, helping it remain flexible and protected.

Only one coat is required. After a few minutes, wipe away any excess oil and allow the furniture to cure properly.

Outdoor Teak Wood Treatment

Outdoor teak furniture and wooden elements are exposed to sun, rain, and temperature fluctuations, which can cause the wood to turn grey and rough over time.

To protect it effectively, first clean the surface thoroughly. If the wood has developed a grey patina or feels rough, sand lightly with fine sandpaper and remove all dust before treatment.

We recommend using our outdoor wood oil, DuroGrit. Like our indoor oil, it only requires a single coat for optimal protection. DuroGrit contains environmentally friendly ingredients and provides strong resistance against changing weather conditions and UV rays.

With proper outdoor teak treatment, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your outdoor furniture and wooden elements.

Treating Teak Garden Furniture

Teak garden furniture requires extra care to stay beautiful for many years. You can allow it to naturally weather and develop a grey patina, or treat it to preserve its original colour.

With our outdoor oil DuroGrit, you can achieve exactly the finish you prefer. Once treated, it’s important to keep the furniture clean and free from dirt, and to repeat the treatment as needed.

We generally recommend reapplying oil 1–2 times per year, depending on how much the furniture is exposed to the elements without protection.

How Often Should You Treat Teak Wood?

How often teak wood needs treatment depends on where and how much it is used. Indoor furniture typically only requires oil treatment once a year, while outdoor furniture needs more regular attention, especially during wet and sunny seasons.

The most important part of maintenance is regular cleaning to prevent dirt from turning into stubborn stains.

Teak wood treatment is generally a simple process that can significantly increase the lifespan and beauty of your furniture. Whether your teak is indoors, outdoors, or part of your garden furniture, keeping it clean, applying protective oil, and protecting it during extreme weather conditions will ensure it remains beautiful for many years to come.
